The Radionics XKnife Miniature Multileaf Collimator (MMLC) is a powerful instrument for conformal radiation therapy using a linear accelerator (Linac). The computer-controlled motorized leaves provide clinicians with increased conformation to target volumes. This results in the increased delivery of dose to target volumes while reducing dose to nearby normal tissue and critical structures.

The XKnife MMLC is designed to meet the clinical needs of today's advancing technology. It can be used for small field stereotactic radiosurgery or radiotherapy with greater conformation accuracy and efficiency than circular collimators or blocks. With the Radionics XKnife RT software, the MMLC enables conformal and IMRT treatments to be performed with finely shaped field patterns.
Advanced Design Features
The XKnife MMLC incorporates many unique and advanced design features for better functionality and reliability. Developed in collaboration with M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, it is based on extensive experience and testing*. Its precise and uniform 4 mm leaf widths at isocenter provide fine-field shaping for small and larger fields. The MMLC has a large 10 cm x 12 cm field size that makes it applicable to irregular tumor volumes in the brain, head and neck, spine, as well as other sites.

Safe, Convenient and Efficient
The use of a large field size, 4 mm wide leaves and easy to use software, combine to make the MMLC an efficient alternative to cut block collimators. The installation system and convenient storage cart enable placement and removal of the unit in minutes. Changing from treatment plan to treatment plan involves simply loading treatment field files. No hardware changes are needed, thus making the overall treatment process easier and safer than cut blocks.
Quality assurance procedures assist in the accurate and reliable function of the XKnife MMLC each time it is used. A redundant position checking system is used to verify leaf position and the software confirms the pattern through the graphical user interface. Once the pattern file is sent and the field is correctly generated, dose is delivered. The next pattern file is sent and the treatment continues, with no need to change heavy blocks or collimators.
Performance By the Numbers
The XKnife MMLC is designed to deliver accurately shaped beams with minimal radiation reaching surrounding tissue. Through-leaf and between-leaf leakage performance meets the ICRU TG 40 requirements for a blocking or beam shaping accessory (<2.0% leakage). Penumbra characteristics of the MMLC are optimized for treatment delivery using conventional radiation therapy and intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT).

Radionics will maintain your MMLC™ workstation and keep it running in peak operating condition, and ensure that the latest software upgrades are performed.
